Pere Ferrer Pujol (1934-2001), better known as Pere Pujol, was born in Artà. At the age of nine he became familiar with the Majorcan rondalles (traditional stories from the island) in the house where his mother worked as a servant. He barely knew how to read but the figures from the rondalles enchanted him. Very early on, giants, witches, fairies and demonds filled his world.
At the age of 32, he could no longer pursue his usual work due to an illness and began to make sculptures out of clay, resin, papier-mâché etc. In 1970 Pere Pujol, as an autodidact sculptor and gifted with a lively imagination, began to sculpt the first figures for “Sa Rondaia” and four years later, during the Sant Antoni festival, he presented Sa Rondaia by Pere Pujol to the public: forty figures made of papier mâché, clay, resin and bronze. All were inspired by the work “Aplec de rondaies mallorquines”, written by the Reverend Antoni Maria Alcover i Sureda.
Through his imagination, creativity and innate talent, Pere brought all these demons, witches, giants and princesses to life. Joan from “Es nas de dos pams” and the fairy from “S’hermosura del món” and “Sa filla del sol i sa lluna” are just a couple of the characters brought together in this unique space. He created an entire world of characters that represent universal values that we all have a duty to pass on to future generations so that they are not lost.
In the hall, after the shop, you can see an example of Pere Pujol’s workshop. Above the shelf can be seen, together with Saint Anthony, the typical “dimonis” – demons – of Artà. These demons come out only once a year, on January 17th, the feast of St. Anthony. These people are, together with the “caparrots”, the most important figures of the Fiestas of Artà.
